L.A. writes a piece weekly for TheStreet.com and this week's article is reprinted here with permission.

Intel has been showing signs of life again and it's not clear whether Intel is the driver or if the sector itself is what has things moving topside. How you answer that question should affect your decision on what to buy.

For the most part, there is a dearth of opportunity on the long side of trading right now. After the August devastation, the well has gone dry. There are, however, a few stocks that are holding well like McDonalds, Apple, and Pricesmart.

Last month I penned a piece for RealMoneyPro subscribers pointing out that the bull market that has existed since 2009 was most likely at an end. I remained cautiously bullish throughout, because the qualified trends on the intermediate-term time frame have never told us to do otherwise. Well folks, now they have!

Applied Material earnings are on tap and it comes at a time where the semiconductor sector is reeling. I thought I would take a quick look to see if it might be playable in front of earnings and if not, then afterwards.

It has been over a year since I last looked at MicroFinancial, a specialized commercial finance company providing equipment leasing and other financing services mostly for smaller equipment. When I first discovered the company my thought was that the charts showed a lot of potential.

Trading a stock in front of earnings in my opinion is usually a coin flip. First, you have to get the number right -- will the company meet or exceed the expected numbers? -- and then you have to get the reaction right. Sometimes numbers are beat and stocks sell off. Other times numbers are missed and stocks climb.

L.A. writes a piece weekly for TheStreet.com and this week's article is reprinted here with permission.

HomeAway is a vacation travel site with a huge member base on multiple continents. Unlike most IPOs it has profits as well. HomeAway (which plans to trade under the symbol AWAY) controlled expenses, sought out key acquisitions and is focused on profits from travel-related services like insurance for property damage, credit card processing and travel insurance, adding those to the main revenue generator, the annual subscription fees from members.

This week we're seeing earnings from some technology stocks -- Adobe and Jabil reported Tuesday; Micron and Oracle report Thursday. With the official earnings season just a couple weeks away, these early/late reports can offer some insight into what to expect. Adobe looks fine with guidance at the high end of the range. The stock popped after-hours Tuesday but had sold off for a month into the report. Jabil looks like a carbon copy on the Adobe's behavior after reporting Tuesday as well.

There's a lot of buzz surrounding the Pandora public offering today. Shares were well received with the offering price being bumped higher in recent days. A stock that has suffered in the run up to this offering is Sirius XM Radio, whose paid subscription revenue model potentially finds some increased competition from this upstart.

L.A. writes a piece weekly for TheStreet.com and this week's article is reprinted here with permission.

Apple introduced its iCloud Monday along with a slew of other products. Although late to the cloud party for virtual tunes, Apple has a reputation of killing the competition when it does show up and this product looks to be solid with the wireless push to keep all a consumer's devices in sync via the cloud.

International Business Machines is a market leader. How this behemoth continues to grow earnings at just over a double-digit clip while revenue grows at just shy of 8% year over year isn't as easy to explain as its charts. The company never seems to get the respect it is due, but I guess most big companies outside of Apple are in that same boat. IBM's charts require some respect though.

The oil markets were roiled last week, posting huge losses. Yesterday, after a two-day respite, the decline began again. Same with copper, which is supposed to be the best indicator of the economic future? Is it telling us that the bull market in stocks is done?

L.A. writes a piece weekly for TheStreet.com and this week's article is reprinted here with permission.

Over time, every star falls. In the stock market, some fall harder than others and some never rise again. Microsoft was once a star having experienced the meteoric rise to the top in the 1990s and having languished ever since. The company is set to release earnings tonight after the bell and analysts don't seem to have much enthusiasm about the prospects nor do the charts.
