Although I remain solidly of bullish bent, as a technician I have to always keep my ear to the ground examining the chart action that speaks to my expectations as well as against them. Ever since I began writing for Minyanville in late May I have attempted to demonstrate how the markets typically leave clues on the charts with respect to what they wish to do next and that, if you pay attention, you have an odds-on advantage over anyone who doesn’t.

With volume and volatility set to pick up now that the fall trading season is coming into full view, a renewed interest in the markets is likely as well. A quick look at the major indices reveals a market that was indeed a "sell in May and go away," as the major indices are sitting right at the highs from April as September begins. In general, the code words for traders remain "error to the long side" when trading these markets, and the best way to do that is to pick at individual entries that offer up lower-risk trade setups.
